🕊️ The Crane’s Deceit and the Crab 🦀
In a peaceful pond surrounded by tall reeds and blooming lotus flowers, many fish, frogs, and small water creatures lived happily. Among them lived an old crane who once was a skilled hunter. In his younger days, he could easily catch fish with his sharp beak and quick movements.
But as time passed, the crane grew old and weak. His legs trembled, and his wings no longer moved swiftly. Catching fish became difficult, and hunger troubled him every day.
One morning, instead of hunting, the crane stood silently near the edge of the pond with a sad expression. The fish noticed his unusual behavior.
“Why are you not hunting today?” asked a curious fish.
The crane sighed deeply. “My friends,” he said softly, “I have heard terrible news. A group of fishermen plans to drain this pond soon. They will catch all of you. I feel sad because I have grown attached to this place.”
The creatures of the pond were frightened. Panic spread quickly. “What shall we do?” they cried.
The crane pretended to think carefully. “I know of another large pond far away from here. It is deep, safe, and full of fresh water. If you trust me, I can carry you there one by one in my beak.”
The fish were desperate and agreed without suspicion. The crane picked up the first fish gently in his beak and flew away. But instead of taking it to another pond, he carried it to a nearby rock, killed it, and ate it.
He returned to the pond looking tired but satisfied. “Your friend is now safe in the new pond,” he said calmly.
Every day, he repeated the same trick. Each time he carried a fish away and secretly devoured it behind the rock. The number of fish in the pond slowly decreased, but fear kept the remaining ones silent.
Among the creatures lived a clever crab who watched the crane carefully. Something did not feel right to him. “If the other pond is so wonderful,” he thought, “why does the crane always return alone?”
One day, the crab approached the crane and said, “Dear crane, you have saved many lives. Please take me to the new pond as well.”
The crane hesitated. He had never carried a crab before. But hunger overcame caution. “Very well,” he agreed.
The crab climbed onto the crane’s back and held his neck firmly with his strong claws. As they flew over the forest, the crab looked down and noticed a pile of fish bones near a rock.
“What is that below?” the crab asked suspiciously.
The crane laughed wickedly. “Those are the remains of the fish I have eaten. There is no second pond. You will soon join them.”
But the crane had underestimated the crab. With great strength, the crab tightened his claws around the crane’s neck. The crane struggled and flapped his wings wildly.
“Please spare me!” cried the crane.
But it was too late. The crab cut the crane’s neck with his sharp claws. The crane fell lifeless to the ground.
The brave crab returned to the pond and told the remaining creatures the truth. They were shocked but grateful for his courage and intelligence.
“We trusted too easily,” said one fish sadly.
The crab replied, “Fear blinded us. We must always think carefully before believing sweet words.”
From that day forward, the pond creatures became wiser and more cautious. They never again trusted someone without questioning their intentions.
The pond returned to peace, but the story of the crane’s deceit was remembered for generations as a warning against blind trust.
Do not blindly trust those who appear kind.
Wisdom and alertness can save lives.
Greed and deceit eventually lead to destruction.
