🐍 The Water Snake and the Cobra 🐍
In a quiet forest filled with tall trees and flowing streams, there lived many kinds of animals and reptiles. Among them were two very different snakes. One was a harmless water snake who lived peacefully near a clear pond. The other was a fierce cobra who ruled the dry lands of the forest.
The water snake spent most of his days swimming in the cool pond, catching small fish and frogs. He was gentle by nature and rarely bothered anyone. The animals near the pond were not afraid of him because he never harmed them without reason.
Not far from the pond lived the cobra. The cobra was strong, poisonous, and feared by almost every creature in the forest. Many animals stayed away from his territory because they knew his bite could be deadly.
One hot summer afternoon, the cobra came near the pond in search of water. As he moved through the grass, he noticed the water snake swimming peacefully.
The cobra watched him for a while and then laughed proudly.
“What kind of snake are you?” the cobra asked. “You live like a weak creature among fish and frogs. A true snake should inspire fear wherever it goes.”
The water snake calmly lifted his head from the water and replied politely, “I do not wish to frighten anyone. I live peacefully and take only what I need to survive.”
The cobra shook his hood proudly.
“Peacefulness is for the weak,” he said. “Look at me. Everyone fears me. Even the strongest animals avoid my path. That is true power.”
The water snake listened quietly but did not argue.
Days passed, and the cobra often returned to the pond. Each time he mocked the water snake for living a calm and harmless life.
“You will never be respected if others are not afraid of you,” the cobra would say.
One evening, as the sun was setting and the forest grew silent, a group of villagers entered the forest. They were searching for firewood and water.
As they walked near the pond, one of them suddenly spotted the cobra resting under a rock.
“Look! A cobra!” someone shouted.
The villagers immediately grabbed sticks and stones. Knowing how dangerous a cobra could be, they decided to kill it before it harmed anyone.
The cobra tried to raise his hood and hiss loudly, but the villagers surrounded him. Within moments, they struck him with their sticks until he lay still on the ground.
From the pond, the water snake watched everything quietly.
The villagers then approached the water’s edge to drink. One of them noticed the water snake swimming slowly in the pond.
“It’s just a harmless water snake,” he said. “Leave it alone.”
The villagers paid no attention to the water snake and soon left the forest.
As night fell, the pond became calm again.
The water snake slowly came out of the water and looked at the place where the cobra had been lying.
He felt sad, not because the cobra had mocked him, but because pride and arrogance had led to the cobra’s downfall.
The next day, the animals of the forest gathered near the pond and spoke about what had happened.
The wise old turtle said, “Strength alone does not bring safety. Sometimes kindness and humility protect us more than power does.”
The animals nodded in agreement.
The water snake returned to the pond and continued living peacefully as before. He never boasted about his survival and never spoke badly about the cobra.
But the forest creatures remembered the lesson for a long time.
They understood that being feared by others is not the same as being respected. Sometimes the quiet and gentle path is the safest one.
True strength does not lie in making others fear you.
Humility, wisdom, and peaceful living often provide greater protection than pride and aggression.
