🦊 The Greed of the Jackal 🦊

Long ago, deep inside a dense forest, there lived a jackal named Karku. He was clever, quick, and always searching for food. But unlike other animals, Karku had one dangerous habit—he was extremely greedy. No matter how much food he found, he always wanted more.

Every day, Karku wandered through the forest looking for something to eat. Sometimes he hunted small animals, and sometimes he searched for leftovers left behind by stronger predators. Though he often found enough food to satisfy his hunger, he was never content.

One day, while wandering through the forest, Karku smelled something delicious in the air. His nose twitched with excitement. He quickly followed the smell through bushes and trees until he reached a quiet clearing.

There he saw an incredible sight.

A hunter had recently passed through the forest. In the clearing lay several dead animals — a deer, a wild boar, and a rabbit. The hunter had killed them but had not yet returned to collect them.

Karku’s eyes widened with joy. “What wonderful luck!” he cried happily. “So much food all at once! I will feast for many days.”

He ran around the clearing excitedly, imagining the delicious meals he would have. But soon his greedy mind began to think even more.

“If I eat the deer first, the boar and rabbit will still remain,” he thought. “But what if another animal comes and steals them? I must protect all this food.”

He started planning carefully. “Perhaps I should eat the rabbit first because it is small. But then again, the deer is bigger and more tempting. Maybe I should start with the boar.”

Unable to decide, the jackal kept pacing around the clearing. His stomach growled loudly, but instead of eating, he continued thinking about which meat would be best.

As he looked around, Karku noticed something else lying near the dead animals — a strong bow with its string still tightly stretched.

The greedy jackal stared at it curiously. “This string looks like it is made from animal hide,” he thought. “It must be tasty as well.”

He began to imagine eating everything in the clearing — the rabbit, the deer, the boar, and even the bowstring.

“Why should I leave anything behind?” he said proudly. “All of it belongs to me.”

First he sniffed the rabbit, but he did not eat it. Then he walked toward the deer, but again he stopped himself. “No, no,” he said. “I should save the best meat for later.”

Finally, his eyes returned to the bow lying on the ground.

“The string is small,” he said to himself. “I will eat it first, and then I will slowly enjoy the rest of the feast.”

Without understanding the danger, Karku placed the bow between his paws and bit into the tightly stretched string.

The moment the string snapped, the bow suddenly sprang back with great force.

Before the jackal could move, the sharp end of the bow struck him violently in the chest. The powerful blow injured him badly.

Karku cried out in pain and fell to the ground. His greed had blinded him. Instead of enjoying the food that was easily available, he had foolishly tried to eat everything at once.

Soon his strength faded, and the greedy jackal lay helpless on the forest floor.

Meanwhile, other animals in the forest quietly watched from a distance. They shook their heads sadly at the jackal’s foolishness.

One old crow sitting on a nearby tree said wisely, “Greed often leads to destruction. The jackal had enough food to satisfy his hunger for many days, but his endless desire brought him trouble.”

By evening, the hunter returned to the clearing. He collected the animals he had hunted and left the forest again, never knowing the strange fate of the greedy jackal.

The forest slowly became quiet again, but the story of Karku the jackal spread among the animals. It became a lesson told again and again to remind everyone about the dangers of greed.

From that day on, many animals in the forest remembered the wise crow’s words and tried to remain content with what they had.
