🦊 The Jackal Waiting for the Bull 🐂
Long ago, in a vast forest filled with tall trees and winding rivers, many animals lived peacefully. Among them was a clever but extremely lazy jackal named Ketu. Ketu was known for his sharp mind, but he had one major weakness—he hated hard work. Instead of hunting for food like other animals, he always looked for easy opportunities.
One afternoon, while wandering near the edge of the forest, Ketu noticed a strong and healthy bull grazing in a green meadow. The bull had wandered away from a nearby village and seemed very relaxed as it ate the fresh grass.
As the jackal watched the bull carefully, he noticed something unusual. The bull had two large hanging pieces of flesh beneath its belly. Ketu had never seen such a thing before.
The greedy jackal began imagining that those pieces of flesh would soon fall to the ground. “When they fall,” he thought excitedly, “I will have a delicious meal without doing any work.”
Instead of searching for food elsewhere, Ketu decided to follow the bull. He stayed at a distance and patiently waited for the flesh to fall.
The bull slowly walked through the meadow, eating grass and enjoying the peaceful day. Meanwhile, the jackal followed him everywhere.
Hours passed, but nothing fell.
Still, the jackal refused to give up. “It will happen soon,” he told himself. “I just need to wait a little longer.”
Even when the sun began to set and the bull returned toward the forest path, Ketu continued following him. The bull drank water from a stream and rested under a tree.
The jackal hid behind bushes, watching carefully.
Days passed in the same way. The bull moved from place to place, grazing peacefully, while Ketu kept following him with hope in his heart.
But the flesh never fell.
During those days, the jackal ignored many chances to find food elsewhere. Small animals crossed his path, and fruits fell from trees, but Ketu refused to eat them.
He kept thinking, “Why eat small food when a big feast is coming soon?”
However, the feast never came.
After several days of waiting, the jackal became weak and hungry. His body grew thin because he had wasted so much time chasing a false hope.
One evening, as the bull peacefully walked back toward the village fields, the tired jackal finally realized the truth. The pieces of flesh were not going to fall at all.
Feeling foolish, he sat down under a tree and spoke to himself, “I was so greedy and lazy that I refused to work for my food. I wasted many days waiting for something that was never going to happen.”
At that moment, an old owl sitting on the tree above heard the jackal’s words. The wise owl said, “Greed often blinds the mind. When we chase easy rewards without effort, we may lose even the small opportunities that come our way.”
The jackal nodded sadly. He now understood his mistake.
From that day forward, Ketu decided to change his habits. Instead of waiting for luck, he began searching for food honestly like other animals.
Though the lesson had cost him many hungry days, it made him wiser and more responsible.
The forest returned to its peaceful rhythm, and the bull continued grazing freely, unaware of the strange hopes the jackal once had.
Greed and laziness lead to disappointment.
Hard work and realistic thinking are better than waiting for impossible rewards.
