The Merchant, the Mice, and the Weighing Scale
In a busy town filled with traders and customers, there lived a merchant named Arjun. He was known for his honesty and kindness. His small shop was always full of grains, spices, and other goods neatly arranged on wooden shelves. Among his most valuable tools was a heavy iron weighing scale, which he used to measure goods fairly for his customers.
Arjun had a close friend named Mahesh, who lived in the same town. Unlike Arjun, Mahesh was clever but not always honest. He often tried to take advantage of situations for his own benefit.
One day, Arjun had to travel to a distant city for business. Before leaving, he thought about his belongings and decided to leave his valuable weighing scale in Mahesh’s care.
“Mahesh,” Arjun said, “this weighing scale is very important to me. Please keep it safe until I return.”
Mahesh smiled and replied, “Of course, my friend. You can trust me completely.”
With that assurance, Arjun left for his journey, unaware of what was about to happen.
As soon as Arjun was gone, Mahesh looked at the weighing scale and thought, “This is made of pure iron. I can sell it for a good price and make some easy money. Arjun may not even ask for it.”
Driven by greed, Mahesh sold the weighing scale in the market. He spent the money and soon forgot about it.
Months later, Arjun returned to the town. His business trip had been successful, and he was eager to restart his shop. The first thing he did was visit Mahesh to collect his weighing scale.
“Mahesh, I am back! Thank you for keeping my scale safe. May I have it now?” Arjun asked politely.
Mahesh hesitated for a moment, then came up with a lie. “Oh, my dear friend,” he said sadly, “I feel very sorry to tell you this, but something unfortunate happened. A group of mice came into my house and ate your weighing scale.”
Arjun was shocked, but he did not show his anger. Instead, he calmly said, “Mice ate the iron scale? That is quite surprising. But if that is what happened, I cannot change it.”
Mahesh felt relieved, thinking that Arjun had believed his story.
After a few days, Arjun invited Mahesh’s young son, Ravi, to accompany him to the river for a walk. Mahesh trusted Arjun and allowed his son to go.
Arjun took Ravi to a safe place and left him in the care of a trusted friend. Then he returned alone to Mahesh’s house.
Mahesh looked around and asked, “Where is Ravi? Didn’t he go with you?”
Arjun replied calmly, “Yes, he did. But something strange happened. While we were walking, a large hawk suddenly came down and carried him away.”
Mahesh was furious. “What nonsense! How can a hawk carry away a boy? That is impossible!” he shouted.
Arjun looked at him seriously and said, “If mice can eat a heavy iron weighing scale, then surely a hawk can carry away a small boy.”
Mahesh realized that Arjun had understood his lie and was teaching him a lesson. He felt ashamed of his actions.
“Please forgive me, my friend,” Mahesh said with regret. “I was greedy and dishonest. Your weighing scale was not eaten by mice. I sold it. I will return its full value to you immediately. Please bring my son back safely.”
Arjun nodded. “I only wanted you to realize your mistake,” he said. “Honesty is the foundation of friendship.”
Mahesh quickly arranged the money and gave it to Arjun. After that, Arjun brought Ravi back home safely.
Mahesh hugged his son tightly and thanked Arjun for his wisdom and kindness. From that day on, he promised never to lie or act dishonestly again.
Arjun also forgave Mahesh, and their friendship continued, now stronger and based on trust and honesty.
The story of the mice and the weighing scale spread throughout the town. People often shared it as an example of how clever thinking can expose dishonesty and teach valuable lessons.
And whenever someone tried to cheat another, they were reminded that lies may seem easy at first, but the truth always finds a way to come out.
Dishonesty may bring short-term gain, but truth and cleverness will always expose it in the end.
