🐒 The Monkey and the Wedge 🪵

In a quiet village near a dense forest, a group of carpenters was working hard to build a large wooden temple. Every morning, they carried heavy logs, cut them carefully, and shaped them into strong pillars. The sound of hammers and saws echoed through the air as the workers focused on their tasks.

One afternoon, the sun became very hot. The carpenters decided to take a break for lunch. Before leaving, they left a large half-split log in the courtyard. To prevent the log from closing back together, they had inserted a thick wooden wedge firmly between the split parts. Then they walked away, planning to return after their meal.

Not far away, a troop of monkeys was watching everything from the trees. The monkeys were playful and curious creatures. They loved to jump into new places and explore anything unusual. As soon as the carpenters left, the monkeys climbed down into the empty courtyard.

They began swinging from ropes, scattering wood chips, and playing with the tools. Among them was one young monkey who was especially mischievous. He was always eager to try new things without thinking about the consequences.

While exploring, the curious monkey noticed the large log with the wedge stuck in it. He circled it carefully, tilting his head in confusion. “What is this strange piece of wood doing here?” he wondered aloud.

Another monkey warned him, “Leave it alone. It must belong to the humans. It could be dangerous.”

But the young monkey laughed. “Dangerous? It’s just a piece of wood! Watch me remove it.”

He climbed onto the log and sat right in the middle of the split. His tail and legs dangled between the open gap. With both hands, he grabbed the wooden wedge and began to pull it out. The wedge was tight, but the monkey was determined. He tugged harder and harder, ignoring the warning of his friends.

The other monkeys grew nervous. “Stop! That wedge is holding the log open!” one of them shouted.

But the young monkey was too proud to listen. With one final strong pull, he yanked the wedge free.

In an instant, the two halves of the heavy log snapped shut with great force. The monkey screamed in pain as he found himself trapped painfully between the wooden pieces. His playful laughter turned into cries for help.

The other monkeys rushed forward, shocked and frightened. They tried to pull him free, but the log was too heavy. The more he struggled, the worse it became. Finally, after much effort, the monkeys managed to push the log slightly apart and free their injured friend.

The young monkey lay on the ground, trembling and ashamed. His curiosity and foolish pride had caused him great pain. He realized too late that he had interfered with something he did not understand.

Just then, the carpenters returned from their lunch break. Seeing the monkeys scatter, they noticed the wedge lying on the ground and the log tightly closed. They shook their heads, understanding what must have happened.

Back in the forest, the injured monkey rested quietly. He no longer boasted or ignored advice. Instead, he listened carefully whenever older monkeys spoke. His painful experience had taught him a lesson he would never forget.

The troop of monkeys also became more cautious. They understood that not everything should be touched or disturbed. Some things serve a purpose, even if that purpose is not immediately clear.

As time passed, the story of the monkey and the wedge spread among the animals of the forest. Parents told it to their young ones as a warning about careless curiosity and unnecessary interference. The forest grew wiser because of one monkey’s mistake.

The carpenters completed the temple successfully, and peace returned to the village. The monkeys continued to play in the trees, but they remembered the painful snap of the closing log whenever they saw humans working below.
